#1 From Creation to the Conquest of Canaan

Promise and Deliverance is the story of God's dealings with His people. In Volume 1, the promise comes to the first people after their fall from God's favor and is repeated, amplified and clarified when God speaks to Noah, Job, Abraham, Jacob, Moses, and other figures in the story. As the drama unfolds, the people called to live in covenant fellowship with God are given an indication of what deliverance means when they are led out of bondage in Egypt and into the promised land.
The author shows again and again how events point ahead to the Christ, who was already moving among His people long before His incarnation, working in their hearts and showing them a better future.
Promise and Deliverance is not a collection of stories about colorful figures in the distant past; it is a guide to the Scriptural revelation about our deliverance, which begins with the promises of the book of Genesis and leads to the New Jerusalem described in the book of Revelation.

#2 The Failure of Israel's Theocracy

Promise and Deliverance is the story of God's dealings with His people. In Volume 2 we see that His promise of a land has been fulfilled. The Israelites have taken over the land of Canaan. But they are unfaithful to the covenant and repeatedly go astray. When God punishes them for their unfaithfulness, they cry out for deliverance and God answers their cries. We are shown a parade of judges and kings, each of them called to reflect something of the glory of the King who was to come.
The failure of Israel's theocracy demonstrates that our deliverance and redemption will never be achieved through human means. The movement from an independent kingdom to a vassal state to exile to partial restoration of Israel as a nation cries out for a King who holds all power in His hands - our Lord Jesus Christ.

#3 Christ's Ministry and Death

Promise and Deliverance is the story of God's dealings with His people. In Volume 3 the promise of a savior and redeemer unfolds. Through His birth, ministry, suffering and death, our Lord Jesus presents Himself to His covenant people - the people of Israel - as the long awaited Messiah - the Christ. As His life and ministry unfolds, Christ emphasizes to His disciples that keeping the law will not justify them before a righteous God, but that deliverance comes only through faith in Him.
The author consistently shows how the events foreshadowed in the Old Covenant are fulfilled in Christ. The historical events of the Old Testametn cried ouf for a King who holds all power in His hands. De Graaf, by opening the gospels systematically, shows how Chris was appointed by God the Father to be this King - the King who restores God's Covenant Kingdom to its intended purpose.

#4 Christ and the Nations

The late Rev. Simon Gerrit De Graaf (1889-1955) was a minister in the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands. His close affinity to Klaas Schilder, leader of one of the most important reformational movements, is evident in most of his works. Since one may question why their ways parted in 1944, it is important to realize that Schilder was suspended and De Graaf was not. When the synodical leaders realized that many faithful members were following Schilder (though those members believed to be simply faithful to God in their liberation of synodical actions) they used especially De Graaf to bring reconciliation, or, perhaps more accurately, to put the members of the church in a smoke screen. They refrained from suspending him because they realized very well that a second exodus would follow. Time has clearly proven the faithfulness of Klaas Schilder and "his" followers while the "synodical" churches have been absorbed in the liberal Protestant Church in The Netherlands. Yet, today, several new reformations have come about from the so-called "liberated churches" in The Netherlands. Also in those churches it is/was evident that reformation and deformation follow each other in nearly every generation, just as in the Israel of the Old Testament. May the republication of De Graaf's influential work Promise and Deliverance, here presented in translation, promote the former and combat the latter in the life of you, your family, and the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ today. -Roelof A.
