A Study of Biblical Eschatology
by G.I. Williamson
Is there a significant difference between our view of the Bible, today, and that of the great
Reformers of the 16th century? The author of this small booklet believes there is. He does not
think this is intentional. But he thinks it is a fact. Our fathers said, "All things in Scripture
are not alike plain in themselves, nor alike clear unto all: yet those things which are necessary
to be known, believed, and observed for salvation, are so clearly propounded, and opened in some
place of Scripture or other, that not only the learned, but the unlearned, in a due use of the
ordinary means, may attain unto a sufficient understanding of them." The author also believes that
two of those doctrines "which are necessary to be known, believed, and observed" are the doctrines
of creation and consummation. It is necessary to know how we had our beginning. And it is also
necessary to know what is planned by God for us in the future. And it is his contention that both
of these (because they "are necessary to be known") have been clearly revealed in Scripture. And by
this he means revealed in such a clear way that even the non-scholars can understand what God says
about them.

Living by Faith
(A Vision of Dort)
Biblical Devotionals Based on the Canons of Dort by Rev. N. Vander Want
Translated by Rev. Richard Stienstra
Of the many ecclesiastical gatherings that have been held in the Netherlands over the centuries,
the Synod of Dordrecht (1618-1619) probably had the greatest impact on the country’s church life.
It produced a Church Order, Orders of Worship were crafted for worship services, and provision was
made for a new Dutch Bible translation (with annotations) which was ready in 1637, and became known
as the States Translation (Statenvertaling—in English: The Dort Study Bible). Moreover, the
delegates also adopted the Heidelberg Catechism and the Belgic Confession as confessions for the
Reformed Churches. In addition, a third confession was produced entitled: “the Canons of
Dordrecht,” commonly referred to as “the Canons of Dort.”
The stimulus for the existence of the Canons of Dort goes back to the controversy between two
professors, Gomarus and Arminius at the University of Leiden. In this dispute the age-old issue of
whether the human will was free or not was central. Can a person on his own choose for God or not?
What causes people to respond so differently to the gospel? Already in early church history (5th
century) Augustine and Pelagius confronted each other about this question, and during the
Reformation (16th century) Erasmus discovered in Luther a strong opponent to the doctrine of the
free will. The question of whether the will is free or not is related as well to the doctrine of
double predestination, meaning that God elected and reprobated from eternity.— From the Author’s

Children's Morning Message
by Amy Le Feuvre
Dear Little Friend,
Will you try to read a page of this book every morning? I do not want it to take the place of
your Bible; but I know that very often schoolboys and schoolgirls are hurried in the morning, and
have not time to read their Bible till the evening.
This little message will not take you long to read; and I have prayed that God may bless it to you
day by day. You will see that we begin the year with the words of Jesus, and we end it with His
words. We do not go straight through the Bible, but you will notice that we get our messages from
every part of it.
Will you try to live out your text every day? Is this too much to ask? Think about it, and act upon
it, and ask the Holy Spirit to remind you of it during the day.
If you are lying awake in the morning before it is time to get up, will you read your message
first, before you read a story-book?
I should like to think that when you have read the last page of this book on December 31, you will
turn back to the first page on January 1 and begin to read it over again. I wonder if you will?
Your affectionate friend,
Amy Le Feuvre
